Daan Dam does photography at its purest. Dam captures real connections, confronting situations and society's imperfections in cities, mostly Berlin- the city he is based in- and everywhere his travels take him. He started taking photos on hazy nights out to better piece together the fragments the next morning. Since then, photography has evolved into something more than a memory aid. It has become his primary means of expression.
One of his strengths is how he manages to create a connection with people from all walks of life. Whether it is a stranger on the street or a person of high cultural significance in a controlled studio setting, Dam manages to create images derived from authentic interaction on any occasion.
The viewer is invited to look beyond the depicted person or object.
His personal work touches on social issues, inclusivity, and economic inequality. But it can sometimes be straight-up funny. This ethos influences his approach to studio and portrait work as well, albeit in a more subtle manner. Even in these settings, he aims to evoke a sense of depth and authenticity while keeping a light-hearted approach to his work.
